RALEIGH, N.C.A contest looks to beautify Midtown Raleigh with street banners displaying a local artist's work.

The Midtown Raleigh Alliance put out a call to local artists last week. Artists are encouraged to submit up to five pieces of original artwork by March 4, keeping in mind the theme "what does Midtown inspire?"

The idea is to display one artist's creations on 26 street banners around Midtown Raleigh, which includes Six Forks Road, St. Albans Road and Wake Forest Road.

The winner of the competition will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize and have their artwork featured in Raleigh Magazine, Midtown Magazine and Triangle-area Capital Bank locations.

"A thriving arts and cultural scene is vital for Raleigh’s future, and MRA is committed to nurturing the arts across our neighborhoods by initiating exciting projects such as this one,” MRA executive director Tara Robbins.

After the submissions are received, MRA will select three artists to create banner art. All three finalists will be paid a stipend for their time, and one winner will be named on April 9. Contest details can be found on the MRA website.
