Community gathering aims to provide hope for veterans

On average, nearly 17 veterans die everyday of suicide, according to the Department of Veteran affairs.

On Friday morning, a local community group in Harnett County is working to help prevent that.

Called 'Hope in Harnett,' the event will include a panel discussion about the reality of veteran suicide and mental health.

Data from the VA shows veteran suicide rates are decreasing, but one death is too many.

Panelist, Matthew Ellard, is a local veteran who says he once struggled with his mental health.

"I was once in that boat, and I’m glad I'm not anymore," he said. "Seek the help you need, and you’re not alone in doing it."

The event starts at 10 a.m.

Even if you aren't a veteran, Ellard says you can be involved. He says most veterans who are contemplating suicide feel isolated, so he's encouraging people to find a veteran and give them a sense of community. Help them know they're not alone.
