WWII Vet Gets Belated Purple Heart

Samuel R. Jones, 84, of Selma, N.C., was awarded a Purple Heart Thursday for service during World War II.

Jones was injured during a torpedo attack on the USS Cavalier during World War II as it transited from Luzon, Philippines to Leyte, Philippines.

He was honored Thursday by the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the Cutter Diligence in Wilmington, N.C.
