Middle Creek has found its next athletic director, and it didn't have to look far.

Robbie Wray will take over the reigns as the school's athletic director, taking over for Jeremy Thompson, who is stepping down at the end of the school year. The school made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

Wray is a member of the Middle Creek Athletic Hall of Fame. He began teaching and coaching at Middle Creek when the school opened in 2002, serving as an assistant softball coach for the first two seasons.

In 2005, Wray was named the head softball coach. In his first season, Wray led the Mustangs to the school's first conference tournament championship in any sport. In 2008, Middle Creek's softball team advanced to the regional championship where it finished runner up.

As the softball coach, Wray was named the conference coach of the year three different times.

"Coach Wray's experiences both inside and outside of our school have prepared him well to serve in this new role," said Middle Creek principal Wade Martin. "Coach Wray's passion for high school athletics; his strong emphasis on building relationships with players, parents, coaches, our Stampede Club Athletic Boosters and all stakeholders; and his commitment to developing character and leadership in our student-athletes makes him the right choice for Middle Creek."

Wray is a graduate of Fuquay-Varina High School and East Carolina University. Upon graduating from college, Wray returned to Fuquay-Varina to teach and coach before making the move to Middle Creek.

Thompson will continue to serve as the athletic director through June 30. Wray will take over the position on July 1 as preparations begin for the 2018-2019 school year.

"He will work closely with our current athletic director, Jeremy Thompson, to ensure a smooth transition in the leadership of our athletic programs," Martin said. "Middle Creek High School sincerely thanks Coach Thompson for his leadership and service during the past five years as our athletic director."

Thompson will continue to serve as the head baseball coach at Middle Creek and will continue teaching at the school.

Middle Creek, a 4A school in Wake County, is a member of the South Wake Athletic Conference.
