WRAL wins 8 NC journalism awards
WRAL won eight awards at the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas/Associated Press awards luncheon Saturday.
The station and website won five first-place awards and three second-place awards. Their division had 310 entries.
Monica Laliberte, Jennifer Sorber Smith, Dave McCorkle and Erin Simanskis won first place in the consumer/economic category for their coverage of Ford Explorer concerns.
Scott Mason and Mark Stebnicki won first place in the health and medicine category for their piece on Donald Wilson, a man battling ALS who gave an inspiring graduation speech at Piedmont Community College.
Tyler Dukes, Maggie Brown, Mandy Mitchell and Justin Arner won first place in the political category for their explainer of gerrymandering in the state.
WRAL.com won first place in the news website category, and the station won first in use of technology for its Olympic Zone.
Cullen Browder, Randall Kerr and Greg Clark won second place in the investigative category for “WRAL Investigates: School Safety.”
Travis Fain and Matthew Burns won second place in original web reporting for “How ‘North Carolina’ Got Erased from Atlantic Coast Pipeline Fund."
WRAL also won second place from the AP for outstanding news operation in North Carolina.
