WRAL on Friday announced two changes on the anchor desk.

David Crabtree, who planned to leave at the end of next year, has decided to delay retirement, staying on WRAL-TV at least through 2021.

"Having the opportunity to serve another year is a gift," Crabtree said. "This continues to be one of the greatest jobs in one of the greatest businesses ... that of journalism. I’m learning something new every day ... often taught to me by our loyal viewers which makes me most fortunate. Having a job I love is a great joy. I look forward to seeing what’s just around the next corner."

Throughout his news career, Crabtree has been recognized for his outstanding field reporting and anchoring. Crabtree has reported from the Vatican, South Africa and Jerusalem, and anchored the news in Little Washington, Denver and Raleigh, in addition to reporting from the most recent 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

"David has been with us for 25 years now, and we look forward to him extending his legacy of outstanding work on the anchor desk and in the field. His continued presence on the air and in the newsroom will surely contribute in a big way to our ongoing success," said WRAL News Director Rick Gall.

Gall also announced the end of a remarkable run with Jeff Gravley leaving at the end of the calendar year. Gall said, “We'd really like him to stay, but he's going to pursue other opportunities, hoping to land in an environment where sports is the primary focus.”

Gravley, who started as a sports photographer and reporter and rose through the ranks to anchor, has spent most of his 35-year broadcasting career at WRAL.

"I never dreamed that I would work for over 3 decades at the station I grew up watching, WRAL," Gravley said. "I just wanted an opportunity here and I’m grateful that I got one."

He is a two-time North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year and is a member of the J.F. Webb High School Athletics and George Witfield halls of fame. Gravley's career is highlighted by coverage of 31 ACC Tournaments, 20 Final Fours, 5 U.S. Open golf tournaments, 2 Super Bowls, a Stanley Cup Finals and the Olympics in Rio. He’s a seven-time regional Emmy award winner.

"I have been very fortunate to cover many people, places and things. It’s a collection of memories that will never, ever go away," he said.

Before he steps away from WRAL, Gravley will host the 39th season of Football Friday.

Gall said of Gravley, "We won't forget his commitment to break stories, his unyielding pursuit of excellence, and his commitment to exceptional sports coverage."
