Woman killed in crash on Hammond Road

A deadly crash in Raleigh on Friday afternoon killed a 55-year-old woman and injured several others.

Police said that at 12:28 p.m., John Thomas Shugart, 58, was driving southbound on Hammond Road when he failed to stop for a red light and struck a car driven by Jamie Deshon Brailsford, 55, who was traveling west on Rush Street.

Brailsford then collided with another car that was traveling east on Rush Street. Brailsford was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 13-year-old passenger in Brailsford's car was also injured in the crash. The teen was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Shugart was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the third car that was hit by Brailsford was not injured.

Shugart was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to stop at a red light.

The investigation is ongoing.
