Mom found shot in car, son called 911 to save her life

A 9-year-old boy called 911 when his mother was shot while driving in Roanoke Rapids, according to family members.

Around 9 p.m. Wednesday night, deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office responded to Branch Avenue and Key Street near Roanoke Rapids.

Beth Walker, 43, was found in her car, which was in a field, with a gunshot wound. Her 9-year-old son was with her.

Walker was transported to ECU Medical Center in Greenville, where she remains in critical condition. Her son is in the care of his grandmother.

WRAL News spoke with Walker's parents, who said they are still unclear about what led to their daughter being shot.

Melinda Walker, Beth's mother, said her daughter was on her way home when she was shot in the torso.

"She was coming to my house," Melinda Walker said. "They said if she makes it the whole left side of her body would be paralyzed."

Melinda Walker said it was her 9-year-old grandson who made the call that could have saved his mother's life.

"He remembers what she always taught him and what he has been taught in school. .. dial 911 in an emergency," she said. "She wouldn't be here today ... he might not be either ... if he wouldn't have dialed 911 to get help there."

Melinda Walker said she is looking for accountability for the person or people who shot her daughter.

She's also caring for her grandson while they wait for Beth to recover.

"He is being looked after," she said. "He is traumatized. He is real upset."

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office has provided few details about the shooting.
