A woman was charged with murder after she showed up Sunday night at a church in Sampson County confessing she was responsible for hurting someone.

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the Mount Carmel Church of God of Prophecy in Autryville around 11 p.m. Sunday night.

A woman identified as Samantha Haines, 31, drove a red Ford Mustang up to the church to ask for help, saying she "may have been responsible" for a person's death, officials said.

WRAL News spoke to Bryan Strickland, the pastor of the church, who said he was closing up for the night when Haines appeared, asking him to call 911.

"I asked her what was going on and she said that she thought she had hurt someone," Stickland said. "She thought she had tried to kill someone."

Haines was cooperative and waited at the church for deputies to arrive, sources told WRAL News. Deputies said Haines was "in distress" when she reported the crime.

Investigators believe Haines was driving around looking for help and chose the church at random because she spotted cars in the parking lot.

Haines led deputies several miles away to the home of Daniel Faircloth, 32, on Rosebud Lane. Faircloth was found dead outside his house.

Investigators determined Faircloth was the registered owner of the car Haines drove to the church.

Haines was charged with Faircloth's murder. She appeared in court Monday and was being held without bond in the Sampson County Detention Center.

WRAL News on Monday spoke to Faircloth's family members and friends who gathered at his home to plan his funeral.

Family members said they didn't know Haines, but the two were friends on Facebook. Family members believe Haines was homeless and Faircloth was letting her live at his home rent-free.

Loved ones said Faircloth was stabbed to death by Haines inside his home. When authorities arrived, they found Faircloth dead outside the home.

Family members said they will try to celebrate Faircloth's life.

"He just lit up a room when he walked in," described Lauriel Renee, Faircloth's stepmother. "He was always respectful and sweet, and he was a really good kid."

An investigation is ongoing.
