Woman charged with DWI after crashing into Durham police officer on NC-55

Durham police officers are investigating an officer-involved crash that happened in the 3800 block of NC Highway 55.

Man charged with DWI after crashing into officer on NC-55 in Durham

On Sunday at 3 a.m., the Durham Police Department responded to an officer-involved crash in the 3800 block of North Carolina Highway 55.

The DPD said Officer Christopher Stone was driving southbound on NC Highway 55. Mikael Young, 21, of Wake Forest was driving north in the southbound lane when she crashed head-on into Stone.

Stone had to be extricated from his car by the Durham Fire Department.

Stone and Young were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Young has been charged with driving while impaired, driving the wrong way on a dual lane highway and reckless driving.

On Monday, Young was also charged with felony serious injury by vehicle.

The southbound lane of NC Highway 55 between Odyssey Drive and Carpenter Fletcher Road was closed for about four hours. The southbound lanes are now open for normal traffic.

The crash remains under investigation and police ask that anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information about the crash contact Investigator J. Rose at 919-475-4149.
