Woman accused of scamming Fayetteville businesses

Police said Friday that they have arrested a woman for allegedly posing as a city inspector and extorting money from Fayetteville businesses.

Kanica Shante Olive, 27, of 3942 Foster Drive, Fayetteville, was charged with two counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

Authorities said Olive would identify herself to businesses and tell owners that they faced a $500 fine for a city code violation.

She'd allegedly leave but return later and say that she could make the problem go away for half that amount.

Investigators believe the scam might involve other people as well.

City Code Enforcement inspectors always carry an identification badge and business cards and drive marked white vehicles.

In Olive's case, she did not present City Code Enforcement identification and drove a black PT cruiser, police said. She also carried a tablet to show business owners their purported violation.

Detectives still want anyone who believes they might have been targeted by Olive to contact the Fayetteville Police Department's fraud unit at 910-433-1856.
