Wintry mix: How are the roads this morning?

From the Triangle area and northward, sleet, freezing rain and even snow are falling, leaving some roads slick. The farther north you go, the more likely roads could be hazardous.

The NC DOT in Person County said major roadways and NC highways are partially covered with wintry precipitation and secondary roads are completely covered.

Durham, meanwhile, woke up to falling sleet.

"From the Triad area and north, through parts of Wake County and Rocky Mount, that's where you have to give yourself a little extra time to be careful on those bridges -- and possibly even some surface roads," said WRAL meteorologist and traffic reporter Brian Shrader.

Roxboro Police put out an 8 a.m. update on road conditions in their city, saying freezing rain created slick conditions in some areas, and that conditions "are expected to worsen in the next few hours as more freezing rain and sleet is expected."

"Motorists are urged to stay off the roads," they said.

By 10 a.m. in the Triangle, road surface temperatures should begin to warm up enough begin melting any remaining ice.
