Wilson police warn public of false information circulating online about shooting death of 5-year-old boy
The Wilson Police Department warned the public that there is misinformation spreading online about the shooting death of 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant.
The police said there has been a fake Facebook account set up to look like the Wilson Police Department's account that is spreading false information about Hinnant. Family members say that Cannon Hinnant was playing outside his father's house when he was shot in the head by the family's neighbor.
Before posting anything on Facebook, check with the official Wilson Police Department's Facebook Page or their webpage with official press releases. If the information does not match with the official releases, it is untrue.
The police department has warned the public twice now about these fraudulent social media posts.
A post from two days ago said that, "We do not expect that there will be any more information released in the near future," in relation to the arrest of the man who police say shot and killed Hinnant.
The fake post claims that the parents of Hinnant are lying about the events that took place before and during Hinnant's death.
The police department is urging people to report these false posts to Facebook in an effort to slow the spread of misinformation.
