Wilson police find shell casings 1/2-mile from fields after shots fired at little league game

Wilson police asserted again this week that a Little League tournament at J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex was not the target of shots fired there earlier this month.

On July 10 at a Wilson City Little League tournament, shots were heard within earshot of those attending a game, and at least one shell casing was found on the ground at the complex. The back window of a van in the parking lot was shot out.

Police said all evidence gathered so far suggests the game wasn't targeted.

On Wednesday, police revealed that three shell casings were found approximately half-a-mile from where the projectile that struck the van was recovered in a parking lot. A road sign was found to have been hit by three projectiles.

"A survey was conducted by a private engineering company and confirmed these measurements from the location where the evidence was collected," read a release from police. "From the location where the roadway sign and casings were located, the baseball fields cannot be visually seen. "

Police have not released any information on who may have fired the shots.

Video from the game showed players, ages 7 to 9, and coaches dropping to the ground and running off the field. Parents sheltered in place underneath bleachers in the confusion of the moment.

Days later, some players and coaches, including Durham's own Bull City Little League team, involved were treated to a Durham Bulls game, where they got to take batting practice.

From the early stages of the investigation, Wilson police have said there was no evidence to indicate the shooters were targeting the fields, but parents and authorities questioned who fired the shots, from where and why.

The SBI crime lab is analyzing the evidence and the investigation is ongoing.

The complex is on Corbett Avenue, near Highway 42.
