Whataburger, the wildly popular fast food chain known for its Texas origins, could soon open its first location in Charlotte.

Zoning records from the city of Charlotte show that plans for a Whataburger on Albemarle Road have been approved. The fast-food restaurant is part of a larger development known as Clear Creek Crossings on Albemarle Road near Rocky River Church Road in east Charlotte. Florida-based Equinox Development is spearheading the Clear Creek Crossings project.

The proposed Whataburger would be located at 12809 Albemarle Road. The plans were approved last week. The project is now in the construction phase, according to zoning records, but no completion date has been set at this time.

Whataburger is also planning several locations in the Triangle as well.

The restaurant is not affiliated with "What-A-Burger," a North Carolina-based burger chain with restaurants in Kannapolis and Concord.
