Two women were struck by a hit-and-run driver Thursday evening as they tried to cross N.C. Highway 1651, just outside Weldon in Halifax County, deputies said Saturday.

Tomekia Richardson, 25, of Weldon, was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where she died. Natasha Pitchford, 22, of Roanoke Rapids, was treated at Halifax Regional Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies said Jonathan Wilson, 17, of Halifax, was traveling north on the highway around 5:30 p.m., swerved to miss a bicycle and hit the women. He fled the scene because he was afraid, authorities said, but was arrested later.

Charges are pending, deputies said.
