Wednesday Wrap: Stirrings in General Assembly

After a quiet two weeks in the General Assembly to start the 2017 legislative session, a bill filed Wednesday by Senate Democrats created a stir.

The bill called for a straight repeal of House Bill 2, the 2016 law limiting LGBT rights. It isn't the first time Democrats have tried to roll back the law, and like previous attempts, it probably won't go anywhere because Republicans control the legislature.

Gov. Roy Cooper said he's still talking with Republican leaders to negotiate a repeal and thinks there are enough votes to do it, but GOP leaders have said they want some sort of compromise on the matter.

Outside the Legislative Building, environmental advocates marked Thursday's three-year anniversary of the Dan River coal ash spill by calling for a faster clean up of coal ash ponds statewide and stricter rules for the process.
