Waterfalls, playgrounds: Three Alamance County parks worth exploring
Mother Nature puts on a show this time of year in North Carolina. She's determined to keep us guessing. From major weather shifts to dramatic landscape transformations, all kinds of things are happening. And in my opinion, getting outside is the best way to experience it all.
As a family, we spend as much time in nature as possible. Although my daughters and I freak out over anything that buzzes, autumn is our jam. There are way less bugs than in summer which makes our experiences more enjoyable.
We're lucky to have local parks with plentiful options. The Alamance County parks below not only have a variety of hiking trails but also unique playgrounds, picturesque views, and open spaces to relax (or run wild!) all in one.
In no particular order, allow me to share a few.
Cedarock Park
Address: 4242 R Dean Coleman Road, Burlington, NC 27215
Current park hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
It's a 500-acre nature park and historic farm. When the animals are out, interacting with them is a big hit with kids. There are also basketball and volleyball courts, canoe rentals, a small waterfall and much more. You could easily spend a day here with your family.
Recently, my daughters and I ditched the after-school routine and headed straight for Cedarock Park. We hiked trails and had a much-needed carefree afternoon. I think it's especially important to add variety to your days during the school year.
Events are usually held at Cedarock throughout the year but check the site for up-to-date information.

Saxapahaw Island Park
Address: 5550 Church Road, Graham, NC 27253
Current park hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Over 30 acres of natural beauty with river access, hiking trails, camping areas, etc. One of the most unique aspects of this park is the 10 foot tall, 6 foot wide, fish slide. You'll understand the amazement when you see it for yourself. Parents can even fit inside. Pretty cool!

Graham Regional Park
Address: 1575 North Jim Minor Rd, Haw River, NC 27258
Current park hours: sunrise to sunset
We've only visited a couple of times but my daughters really enjoy it. On the 18+ acres are climbing boulders, an obstacle course, inclusive playground, and a plethora of other things to entertain your kids.
Graham Regional Park is also known for its zipline. However, the last time we were there, it was out of service. I'm not sure of its current state but be assured, there's plenty to do!
