Wake school leaders want more minorities taking AP courses

Wake County students score above state and national averages on advanced placement courses - but 65 percent of those who take AP courses are white, followed by Asians at 16 percent.

School board members, during a committee meeting on Monday, expressed interest in having more minorities take AP courses. Ideas suggested including identifying bright students while in elementary and middle school.

Board members also expressed interest in students taking courses based on interests, not just to increase their GPA. One solution would be to cap how many AP credits students can earn in a year.
