Wake school leaders say budget is good, but not enough

Wake school leaders will meet on Tuesday to discuss the county's budget and how it will impact them next year.

The budget increase for Wake County schools isn't what the school board asked for, but leaders say it is more than what was originally expected.

Commissioners approved a $45 million increase for the 2019 fiscal year, which doesn't meet the $59 million dollars requested by the school board but is roughly $15 million more than what was recommended.

On Monday, school board members learned of an extra $10 million hole that needs to be filled because of the proposed state budget that promises raises for teachers. Commissioners say the budget they voted on makes per-pupil spending the highest it has ever been. Leaders will meet at 4 p.m. on Tuesday to further discuss the budget.
