WCPSS reassignment plan approved after months of discussion

The Wake County school board on Tuesday night voted 7-1 to approve a reassignment plan for the 2019-2020 school year.

After months of planning and and public input, the school board took their final vote with member Donald Agee as the only one to oppose the plan. The vote comes after three versions of the student reassignment plan were rolled out in August, September and October.

Families can go to www.wcpss.net/enrollmentproposal to see if their school assignment is being changed.

The plan reflects 200 pages of planning.

The school district is trying fill four new schools -- two in Cary, one in Morrisville and one in Raleigh -- while reducing overcrowding at existing schools, and hundreds of parents have weighed in on the plans.

One common concern is switching students from a traditional to a year round calendar -- or a year round to traditional. The district has made some adjustments based on feedback from families.

Just four people signed up to speak at Tuesday night's meeting, but their pleading wasn't enough.

Overcrowding was cited as a main concern, with 9,000 additional students expected to enroll by 2020, but some parents said there are other solutions and that the board seems to be catering to new developments rather than established neighborhoods.

"Someone said in one of these meetings, it's like you're calling a doctor's office and asking 'are you accepting new patients' and then they say, 'yes, we are' and then they hang up and kick out an existing patient to make room," one parent said.
