The Wake County Public School System is scaling back a new security measure for middle school students attending Friday's football game in Wake Forest.

The new rule announced Thursday by the Wake Forest Police Department would have required adults to accompany middle schoolers at the Wake Forest High School game, but after hearing some feedback, the district decided having a parent present is no longer required but strongly recommended.

The Wake Forest Police Department announced there will be extra security Friday at the Wake Forest High School football game.

The department said all middle school-aged students must be accompanied by a supervising adult, age 18 or older, to be admitted into any Wake Forest High School sporting event.

The district changed course on Friday to make an adult guardian optional but recommended, saying, "We appreciate all middle-school-aged students having the appropriate adult supervision at our extracurricular events."

A district spokesperson explained these types of issues are considered on a school-by-school basis.

Heritage High School, also in Wake Forest, made a similar announcement a couple of weeks ago. School officials say middle schoolers have not been following directions and have not been picked up quick enough after the games.

"I know when I went to the malls and different things like that, I didn't cause trouble ... not like what we're seeing today," said Pat Edwards, who lives in Wake Forest.

"It keeps them out of trouble," added Anne Braddy, anothe resident.

Officials recommend spectators arrive early to Friday's game because lines may be longer than usual.

The Wake Forest Cougars will face the Rolesville Rames Friday at 7 p.m.
