A 26-year-old man died Tuesday night in a one-car crash on Averette Road, the state Highway Patrol reported.

David Cook III was driving a convertible when it went out of control and struck a tree, investigators said. The car flipped over, killing the driver, they added.

Speed was a factor in the crash, troopers said. It happened about 9:45 p.m.

The crash was a few hundred yards south of N.C. Highway 98 near Rolesville, an area that seen 16 crashes in the past three years.

Earlier this month, a safety improvement project was approved for the Averette/Highway 98 intersection.
