A Wake County woman says she can feed her family this Thanksgiving thanks to WRAL 5 On Your Side.

WRAL 5 On Your Side is not identifying the woman out of respect for her privacy.

The woman reached out to WRAL 5 On Your Side late Tuesday night to explain she may “not have any food for Thanksgiving” because the recertification process for her food stamps – known as SNAP benefits – were behind.

According to the woman, she turned in her documentation for recertification on Oct. 13 ahead of the November deadline. She was supposed to get stamps on Nov. 7. Despite calling “20 times,” she never got them and had trouble coordinating with food banks.

“I truly have no other way to feed my kids,” she wrote.

WRAL 5 On Your Side emailed the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees SNAP benefits.

By Wednesday, the woman wrote, “I checked my card and my stamps are there. Thank you for all your help.”

Earlier this month, WRAL News reported on the backlog of people waiting to get Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in Wake County.

The situation is so critical-the county is hiring temporary workers to process hundreds of pending applications.

WRAL 5 On Your Side takes on cases based on need and likelihood of achieving a resolution.
