Wake County Schools to vote Tuesday to eliminate enrollment caps at three schools

On Tuesday, an enrollment cap for some schools in Wake County could be lifted.

Wake Schools leaders will vote Tuesday on eliminating enrollment caps at three elementary schools.

The cap is meant to help with overcrowding in schools, but the Board of Education thinks they can do away with it at some schools.

Lifting this cap would make it easier for some families to have their children attend school closer to home.

Apex, Highcroft and Mills Park elementary schools are currently closed to new families because of overcrowding. But enrollment has dropped for a number of reasons.

School leaders are considering opening them back up to all families in the neighborhoods. If the cap is eliminated, new families who move into these neighborhoods will have the opportunity to enroll their children in these schools.

The school board will also consider changing the overflow school for two other capped schools.

They would change the overflow school for Parkside Elementary from Adams Elementary to Carpenter Elementary. For Panther Creek High, it would change from Green Level High to Green Hope High.

Both of the new overflow schools are closer to the capped schools.

This year, the school system isn’t asking the board to add any caps. Enrollment has stayed about the same. Tuesday's meeting begins at 5:30 p.m.
