Wake County park open for pecan picking

Is pecan pie on the menu this month? Historic Oak View County Park in Wake County has opened its pecan grove up for pecan picking.

Throughout November, visitors are welcome to take home some pecans during the park's business hours. They are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday.

This park, which features a collection of historic buildings, a barn with actual goats and a great Farm History Center with a pretend kitchen, market and more for young kids, is one of my favorite places.

There's a lot of space for kids and families to roam and explore. There are plenty of places for picnics. And there are educational activities that families can check out from the Farm History Center during their visit where they can learn about farm life, goats and other topics.

There are a few pecan picking rules at Oak View. 

Visitors should only pick pecans that have fallen on the ground. Don't try and pick them off the trees. They aren't ready if they haven't fallen.

Visitors shouldn't climb into, throw things at or harm any tree in any way.

And you're limited to one lunch-bag sized bag worth of pecans for your family. If you need one, you can get one from the Farm History Center.
