Wake 18-year-old charged with raping girl

A Wake County 18-year-old has been charged with raping a 12-year-old Cary girl, according to authorities.

Michael Campbell McGill, of 5201 Turning Branch Lane, near Fuquay-Varina, was being held under $1 million bond on charges of first-degree statutory rape and statutory sex offense with a child in connection with incidents alleged to have occurred in November.

Wake County Assistant District Attorney Melanie Shekita said McGill gave the girl a ride, and her family contacted law enforcement after she told them what occurred.

"This isn't a situation, based on what we know, that there was any relationship or any knowledge by the family that they were together," Shekita said. "The information that has been received is that she was pressured into doing something she didn't want to do."

Defense attorney Seth Blum wasn't successful in an attempt Monday to get McGill's bond lowered.

"His mother works for the state, [and] his father is disabled. I would not expect them to be able to make a million-dollar bond," Blum said.

Cary police are investigating to determine if there are any other victims.

"We would encourage any families or parents who may have had interactions with the defendant to report any suspicious activity to the Cary Police Department," Shekita said.

McGill's parents declined to comment Monday.

"Things here are not as they seem to be. That’s all I have to say," Charles McGill said.

"This is a young man with no record. My experience with him is that he’s very polite, very respectful," Blum said. "He is a good student who is involved in extracurricular activities. These are very, very serious charges for this young man."

Michael McGill has attended at least two public high schools in Wake County and one in Johnston County since 2017 and was most recently enrolled at Ahop Christian Leadership Academy in Chapel Hill. His social media accounts are full of posts about his high school football career and his desire to play in college.

Ahop officials said they were aware of the allegations but had no comment on his arrest.
