Kinston chef Vivian Howardis an award winner again.

Howard's PBS show "A Chef's Life" won the Daytime Emmy award on Sunday for best culinary program. Howard was also nominated for best culinary host but lost to Lidia Bastianich of “Lidia’s Kitchen."

The James Beard awards, often referred to as "The Oscars of Food," presented its media awards on Friday night in New York City. Panna Cooking's video featuring Howard making black bean-glazed salmon and ginger cabbage was honored as the best instructional video webcast.

In 2016, Howard won the James Beard Award for outstanding host for her work on "A Chef's Life."

A Chef's Life follows Howard as she searches for ingredients throughout North Carolina farms for her restaurant's seasonal menus. Howard owns the Chef and the Farmer in Kinston and won the Southern Book Prize in cooking for her book, "Deep Run Roots."

James Beard Awards honor chefs next week

Raleigh's own Ashley Christensen is a finalist for outstanding chef in the country at the annual James Beard Foundation awards.

Christensen owns Poole's, Death and Taxes, Beasley's and Chuck's. She was named the WRAL.com Voters' Choice Awards Woman of the Year in January. She is also a previous James Beard winner, taking home the award for best chef in the Southeast in 2014.

Another North Carolina chef is also up for a James Beard Award. Chef Katie Button of Nightbell in Asheville is nominated for best chef in the Southeast.

The winners will be announced during a gala at Lyric Opera of Chicago in New York City on May 7.

Howard and Christensen will be participating in the Thrive NC festival, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, on May 10-11 in City Market in downtown Raleigh. Each night will include a tasting event featuring chefs performing live demonstrations, samples from local restaurants and breweries and live music.
