Visibility plummets as dense fog settles into central NC

Dense fog blanketed much of central North Carolina early Tuesday morning, dropping visibility to about a quarter of a mile for most people around the Triangle.

A dense fog advisory stretched almost across the entire state, said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. The advisory will last until noon.

"We're going to stay stuck with this dense deck of clouds up until (noon) at least," Gardner said. "Then, into the afternoon, we're going to see it breaking up."

Temperatures on Tuesday afternoon will rise to about 70 degrees, but it won't be the warmest day of the week. Wednesday and Thursday could break records, Gardner said.

"Tomorrow, we are likely to break a record high," Gardner said. "That record (would be) 78 degrees, and the previous (was) 76, set back in 2011."

The 78-degree temperature will repeat itself on Thursday, too, Gardner said.

Even the morning low temperatures will stay warm, with Thursday showing the coolest start at 58 degrees.
