Vick Family Farms in Wilson is giving back to the community by donating thousands of pounds of sweet potatoes nationwide this holiday season.

Vick Family Farms has been in business since 1975 and has deep roots in the community.

Partner and produce manager Charlotte Vick said giving back to the community is ingrained in the family.

"Our dad raised us to give back," Vick said. "We are fortunate to give back."

This year, the farm donated about 400,000 pounds of sweet potatoes throughout the United States. Vick said it is part of their normal process of giving back during their busiest time of the year.

"It is being put to good use and helping those who really need the food and need our help," Vick said.

The bulk of the donation goes to Feeding America, a nonprofit aiming end to end hunger across the country. Local organizations WRAL News spoke with said they’ve seen an increased need for support in Eastern North Carolina and donations are what keep them going.

Vick said they are happy to help.

"We want our community to thrive and we appreciate the support they’ve given us as well," she said.
