The waxing Moon passes by Venus and Mars this week

Look for the Moon to move past Venus and Mars this week within about 3.5º of each other.

A thin waxing crescent Moon will first pass Venus Wednesday night. Venus is hard to miss it is so bright. The Moon will actually be the more difficult object to find, but Venus can point the way.  Stretch you hand out and hold two fingers together for about 3.5º of angular measurement.

The next evening, the Moon, just fraction fuller, will pass by Mars with about the same separation on the dome of the night sky. Mars is dimmer than Venus and notiicably more orange/red in color.

You will see a little more of the Moon illuminated each evening until it reaches first quarter phase Sunday June 25. Technically will be exactly 50% lit at 3:50 a.m. EDT the morning of Monday June 26.
