Upsets abound for NC incumbents

North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore has won the Republican primary in North Carolina's 14th Congressional District, easily defeating Republicans Jeff Gregory and Lillian Joseph.

Moore, from Cleveland County, is the longest-serving House speaker in North Carolina history. He was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

"Tim has served North Carolina families in the state legislature for 12 years and the Speaker of the state House for nine years," said Delanie Bomar, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. "North Carolina voters will overwhelmingly send Tim to Congress in November.”

Pam Genant defeated Brendan K. Maginnis in the Democratic primary and will take on Moore in November's general election.

In other North Carolina congressional races:

1st Congressional District: Political newcomer Laurie Buckhout defeated two-time nominee Sandy Smith in the Republican primary. Buckhout will face incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Don Davis in November's general election in what is expected to be the state's closest congressional contest.

2nd Congressional District: Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Deborah Ross defeated challenger Michael Camero.

“The future of American democracy hangs in the balance in this election and North Carolina voters could play a decisive role in determining the outcome," Ross said in a statement. "In the months ahead, I will continue working across our state to turn out the vote for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot — from President Biden and our other statewide races to candidates for Congress and the General Assembly. North Carolinians will have a clear choice to make in November. It's up to all of us to reject extremism and bigotry and embrace opportunity and progress.”

Republican Alan D. Swain defeated Robert Morales Vergara and Eugene F. Douglass in the primary. Swain will face Ross in the heavily Democratic district.

4th Congressional District: Republican Eric Blankenburg defeated Max Ganorkar. He will take on Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee in the general election.

5th Congressional District: Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx defeated primary challenger Ryan Mayberry. Democrat Chuck Hubbard will be the opponent in November's general election.

6th Congressional District: Trump-backed newcomer Addison McDowell led a crowded field with 26.1%, ahead of former U.S. Rep. Mark Walker at 24.0%.

Walker told WRAL that he would call for a run-off in the race. "No question about it," he said.

Military veteran Christian Castelli finished third and Bo Hines placed fourth in the six-person primary. There is no Democrat running in the district.

8th Congressional District: Republican Mark Harris, whose apparent 2018 U.S. House victory was overturned by the state board following an investigation into mail-in ballot fraud, topped Allan Baucom in the primary.

Harris finished at 30.4% to avoid a run-off. Baucom had 27%.

The two finished ahead of three other candidates, including North Carolina Rep. John Bradford.

The district is currently represented by Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop, who is running for attorney general.

Democrat Justin Dues will take on Harris in the general election.

9th Congressional District: Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson won his primary, easily defeating Troy L. Tarazon. Democrat Nigel William Bristow awaits in the November general election.

10th Congressional District: Republican Pat Harrigan defeated Grey Mills and three other candidates in the GOP primary. Harrigan, a military veteran, will face Democrat Ralph R. Scott and Libertarian Steven Feldman in the general election. Harrigan got 41.2% of the vote.

The seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry, who is retiring from Congress.

11th Congressional District: Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards won his primary over challenger Christian Reagan. Edwards will face North Carolina state Rep. Caleb Rudow in November.

13th Congressional District: Kelly Daughtry held a lead in a crowded Republican primary in a Triangle-area district. Democrat Wiley Nickel currently represents the district, but he is not running for reelection in the redrawn district that now heavily favors Republicans. Daughtry and fellow Republican Brad Knott are likely headed to a run-off.
