The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced Wednesday that most of U.S. Highway 64 in Edgecombe County will be repaved this summer.

About 20 miles of U.S. 64 will be resurfaced, thanks to two new contracts totaling $30.5 million.

The two contractors will mill and repave the highway in two segments, totaling just more than 20 miles. Those segments combined stretch from Kingsboro Road to the Edgecombe-Martin county line.

The work also will include some widening to the paved shoulders and drainage improvements along this same stretch of highway.

NCDOT awarded the following contracts this month to complete this work:

  • Barnhill Contracting Co. of Rocky Mount for $17.9 million
  • Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh for $12.6 million

The construction is scheduled to start this summer and be completed by the fall of 2024.

Drivers can expect to encounter periodic daytime lane closures when construction begins.
