Beyond the thrills and excitement, Urban Air Adventure Park in Raleigh opens its doors specifically for children with special needs through their Sensory Friendly Play program.

Driven by a passion for creating opportunities for all, Urban Air opens its doors specifically for children with sensory sensitivities every third Saturday of the month from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

This unique program offers a quieter, less stimulating atmosphere where kids can explore the park's attractions without feeling overwhelmed.

Erin Ellis, co-owner of Urban Air, explains the program's purpose. "We really looked for an opportunity for children with special needs and autism to have a chance to come into the park and enjoy all the attractions," Ellis said. "The focal point of this initiative is to provide a space free from overstimulation, where children can revel in the offerings without being overwhelmed by lights, loud music, or crowded surroundings."

Sensory sensitivities can manifest in many ways, making certain environments overwhelming for some kids. Individuals with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders often find the typical sights, sounds, and crowds of an amusement park challenging.

That's where Sensory Friendly Play comes in. Every third Saturday morning, the park transforms into a haven for joyful exploration.

Children can finally experience the thrill of play without the usual barriers, allowing them to soar like everyone else.

"It really just allows them and their families to come in and really enjoy," Ellis said. "We want them to take in all that the park has to offer without worrying about the extra things that might be a little overwhelming for a child."

She says siblings are welcome, and the program aims to create a positive experience for the children and the whole family.

"Parents and guardians can relax knowing their children are safe and having fun, and even join in the activities for quality bonding time," Ellis said.

Partnering with organizations like the Autism Society of North Carolina helps raise awareness about the program and encourages families to participate.

"They're really able to kick back and enjoy what's happening within the park but also participate with their children, providing a bonding experience for them," Ellis said. "We've worked with different groups and it is really just trying to create the word and spread the word so that people know that they have that access to bring their children."

More than 203,000 children in North Carolina have been identified with disabilities, according to publicschoolsfirstnc.org.

Urban Air's Sensory Friendly Play program fills a critical gap by providing a supportive environment where children can engage in social interaction, physical play, and sensory exploration, all tailored to their individual needs.

No pre-registration is required for the event; a simple waiver and a special $17.99 admission fee are all needed to join the fun.
