UNC issues 'all clear' following armed robbery; no suspect in custody

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was on emergency alert for about 90 minutes early Friday after an armed robbery was reported near Ehringhaus Residence Hall.

According to UNC officials, a male student was robbed at gunpoint at about 12:40 a.m. while walking near the dorm, which is off Manning Drive in the central part of campus. No injuries were reported in the incident.

UNC officials issued an emergency alert and used campus-wide sirens shortly after the incident, advising students, faculty and staff to stay inside. An "all clear" message was sent at about 2 a.m. saying the threat to the campus was over, but officials haven't said whether the armed robbery suspect has been arrested.

The suspect was described as a black man about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 20 to 25 years old. He wore a ski mask covering part of his face, authorities said, and he was wearing sweatpants and a Dallas Cowboys jacket. He also had a goatee.

He was last seen running north toward a parking deck in the area of Ridge Road. University police responded to that area shortly after the incident, but it's unclear if the man was arrested.
