UNC fans rush Franklin Street after Duke win, despite warnings not to gather

On par with tradition, fans rushed Franklin Street in Chapel Hill Saturday night after North Carolina's 91-87 win over Duke in Durham.

Unlike tradition, this win came during a pandemic, where large gatherings have been prohibited and discouraged, and social distancing has been the key phrase.

According to Chapel Hill police, officers were called out at 8:15 p.m., just minutes after the game ended. It took them about 35 minutes to disperse the crowd.

UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz released a statement regarding the events on Franklin Street following the game.

“I know many Tar Heels enjoy rushing Franklin Street to celebrate a big win, but we are in the middle of a global pandemic, and COVID doesn’t take a break for the Duke game. We will investigate this incident and work with local authorities to pursue consequences."

The streets are now closed and officials are now actively doing clean up.
