UNC Board of Trustees announces new "School of Civic Life and Leadership"

The UNC Board of Trustees voted to accelerate the creation of The School of Civic Life and Leadership Monday.

David Boliek, a board chair who spoke with Fox & Friends on Saturday, said the move was about "individual freedom and intellectual vigor."

According to a statement from UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz, he will be working with faculty to study the feasibility of such a school.

Some faculty members believe the process was mishandled.

According to Mimi Chapman, a professor and Associate Dean for Doctoral Education, said she's "flabbergasted" by the decision because it left out faculty input.

Chapman said faculty is in charge of curricula, creating degree programs and granting degrees.

Chapman said she doesn't have a problem with the school, but how the Board of Trustees went about its creation.

"It's hard to know how we feel about the school itself because we have no information about it," Chapman said. "We don't know what the purpose is, what problem it is trying to solve."

As for what's next, Chapman said faculty has no idea about a timeline for the school or what the expectations are.
