Two wanted in armed robberies near UNC campus

Two people are linked to a pair of armed robberies on Saturday morning in Chapel Hill.

Officers said they responded to reports of two robberies near UNC-Chapel Hill's campus. The first incident happened on West Cameron Avenue at Granville Towers student housing. The second robbery happened in the area of Crest Drive and Knolls Street.

The first robbery occurred around 2:20 a.m. and the second occurred nearly 7 minutes later. In both instances, two males in a white SUV left the vehicle, assaulted the victims and took their personal property, according to police.

"The whole house was out at bars and parties right when it happened," said Kenzie Novack, who lives near Crest Drive. "That was pretty spooky to realize that we were out at the exact same time."

The victims had minor injuries.

Some UNC students told WRAL News that while they haven't been nervous around that area of campus, they are shaken up by the incidents.

"It always feels really safe on campus, but I think now walking around here, especially around West Cameron, I'll definitely think twice about walking by myself or walking with just a couple of girls at night," said Bella Hilditch, a UNC student.

No arrests have been made. An Alert Carolina message was sent out to the campus community, but students said they were frustrated that they didn't receive the alert until four hours after the robberies.

"That was a little unsettling," said Jess Saunders, another UNC student. "There was so much time where we could have really done something different and really just had no idea."

Police said community members should be cautious and report any suspicious behavior to Chapel Hill police or UNC police.
