Two Raleigh elementary schools get magnet programs

Smith Elementary and Brentwood Elementary will get magnet programs, the Wake County school board decided Tuesday.

The schools, both in Raleigh and on traditional calendars, will begin accepting applications in February 2009.

The Brentwood Elementary will implement an engineering magnet theme, while Smith Elementary will have an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program.

The school board also decided to phase out the magnet program at Daniels Middle School in Raleigh.

Broughton High School will retain its magnet status, officials decided. Concerns about the program had been raised after Daniels lost its magnet status earlier this month.
