Two killed in wreck on US Highway 64 near Knightdale

Two people were killed Sunday night in a three-car wreck that shut down all eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 64 near Knightdale.

The wreck happened just after 10 p.m when a 2004 Mazda passenger car, traveling west on U.S. Highway 64 near Interstate 540, drove off the road into the median. The vehicle continued across the median into the eastbound lanes of U.S Highway 64, colliding with a 2002 Cadillac pickup truck. 

Both the driver of the Mazda, 22-year-old Megan Williams, of Raleigh, and passenger, 25-year-old Brooke Byrnes, of Norristown, Pa., were killed.

It was unclear why the car traveled off the highway into the median. 

The three occupants of the pickup truck were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. 

There was a third car involved in the wreck that side swiped the pickup truck during the collision. No one in that vehicle was injured. 

The roadway, including the ramp to Hodge Road, was closed until about 1 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

No charges will be filed, as the party at fault is deceased.
