Two Cumberland County schools to close for deep-cleaning
Two Cumberland County schools will be closed Wednesday through Friday because of staff quarantined by positive coronavirus cases.
Lewis Chapel Middle School and 71st High School will be deep cleaned and sanitized during that time.
School officials said this is a precautionary measure because of recent positive coronavirus cases among staff at the schools.
While students are not coming to class in person, teachers have been working from the school building. Officials said they did not believe the teachers who tested positive contracted the virus on either school campus.
Officials said teachers have been encouraged to teach class from their home schools.
"We know that employees, they often times over the weekend and throughout the week, they go other places. So, when they come back to the building, if they are positive, in many cases, depending on who they are around at the school building, they may have to be quarantined as well," explained Lindsay Whitley, a spokesperson for Cumberland County Schools.
All Cumberland County Schools students are in remote learning until at least the end of the fall semester.
Cumberland County students will stay in remote learning through end of semester.
The school system did not say how many teachers at the two schools have tested positive or how many were under quarantine.
The situation is also being monitored by the Cumberland County Health Department.
"Our primary goal at the health department is to make sure that we are doing that we can to protect the health and safety of our students, but also the teachers and staff that are in the buildings," said Cumberland County Health Director Jennifer Green.
