Police investigate why two cars caught fire overnight in Raleigh apartment complex

In what's become a reoccurring investigation in May, Raleigh police are working to figure out what caused two cars to go up in flames overnight.

Crews responded to the The Pointe at Midtown Apartments on Navaho Drive just before 1 a.m. on Monday.

Two cars were badly burnt in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

Police said several cars have been set on fire in Raleigh in May.
Police said several cars have been set on fire in Raleigh in May.

A similar pattern has already happened before in May – where two cars have burned overnight under mysterious circumstances, all within 5 to 15 minutes of one another.

On May 4, WRAL reported two cars caught fire overnight in Raleigh around 2 a.m. on the 4400 block of Craftsman Drive, which is only around 5 minutes away from where last night's cars were burned.

Then again on May 20, WRAL reported on two cars that caught fire overnight in Raleigh, also around 2 a.m. One of the burning vehicles was on Dixon Drive in Raleigh; the other was 10 minutes away on Grand Manor Court.

Tony Yamamoto said he got a call from police last week after his white Hyundai sedan went up in flames on Pleasant Valley Road.

"It’s an unfortunate thing to happen, and I don’t want it to happen to other people," said Yamamoto. "This is all for awareness. If someone knows there’s somebody out there, other people can be on the lookout for it and hopefully get to the bottom of the situation."

The location of the fires burned overnight were roughly 10 minutes away from each of these other fires. Police have not answered questions as to whether or not the fires are connected.

Police believe the fires from May 4 were set on purpose; however, they have not given any word yet on what may have started Monday morning's fires.

The Raleigh Fire Department Investigation Team told WRAL News they're working with Raleigh police to attempt to determine any link, leads or further investigative information regarding the fires.

"The hope is that through information and evidence gathering we will together be able to stop these occurrences as soon as possible and determine who and/or what is responsible," a Raleigh fire spokesperson said.
