Durham police: Two boys kidnapped by mother

A Durham woman accused of abducting her sons from the parking lot of Hillandale Elementary School Tuesday morning has turned herself in to police.

Selma Diaz, 46, surrendered to Carrboro police Tuesday evening. She faces felony charges in connection with the alleged abduction.

The boys – Daniel Isai Banegas Diaz, 6, and Jeremias Isaac Banegas Diaz, 5 – were with Selma Diaz and were not harmed, police said.

Court records show a judge granted exclusive temporary custody of them to their father, Roberto Banegas, after he claimed Selma Diaz has bipolar disorder and tried to kill herself in March by jumping in front of a car with her oldest son in hand.

The parents were scheduled to attend a mediation orientation on Oct. 3.
