A tractor-trailer loaded with fuel slammed into a bridge on N.C. Highway 24/27 near Carthage Thursday morning, knocking out part of the bridge, authorities said.

The wreck occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday about three miles from Carthage. About 20 feet of the east side of the bridge over Richland Creek was damaged, authorities said.

State Department of Transportation engineers were assessing the damage Thursday afternoon and how it would affect traffic in the area. Traffic was flowing in both directions across the bridge Thursday evening, although the area around the accident site was narrowed by a half-lane.

A company from Fayetteville was called in clean up diesel fuel that spilled from the truck after the wreck. There was no word on whether any fuel made it into the creek.
