Trooper reinstated following fatal Rocky Mount wreck

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Friday that a trooper involved in a fatal Rocky Mount wreck last month will return to duty next week.

Trooper A.S. Samuel has been on administrative duty since the March 6 collision that killed Maurilia Solis Leon. The Highway Patrol said its investigation determined the collision wasn't preventable.

Leon, 59, turned from the parking lot of a Golden Corral into the path of Samuel's cruiser on northbound U.S. Highway 301, near U.S. Highway 64. Samuel tried to swerve left but struck the driver's door of Leon's Dodge Stratus, authorities said.

Samuel will resume his normal duties on Monday.
