Family, friends gather to remember Raleigh teen killed in shooting

Family and friends gathered Wednesday evening to remember a Raleigh teen who was shot to death last week, not far from where he spent countless hours in the gym.

According to police, 13-year-old Keyshawn Tyrell Gregory was in a car with some friends on Beauty Avenue Friday night when the people in the car exchanged words with some people on the street. Someone then fired shots into the car and hit Gregory, police said.

Gregory had played basketball for Swish City for two years before taking the summer off.

"It's really hard because we used to always be with him and play basketball all the time," Swish City teammate Mehki Weathers said. "He went to my school. It is really hard."

Coach Darryl Wilson said Gregory had big dreams for the future.

"He said, 'Coach, I just want to go to school and get my family out of the hood,'" Wilson said. "He wants the same thing for his brothers. We are all family."

During the candlelight vigil, 15-year-old Tyriq Rowe recited a poem in memory of his friend.

"He was a great basketball player, a great kid," Rowe said. "He didn't deserve what happened to him, but everybody's time comes."

A funeral service is scheduled for Gregory on Monday at the Carlton Gray Funeral Home in Raleigh.

Raleigh police arrested three men, also teens, in connection with Gregory's death.

Malik Armein Jones, 19, of 601 Peach Road in Raleigh, faces a single charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Both Jamal Christopher Howie, 19, and Jonathan Dejesus Chavez, 18, are charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.
