Three arrested after another protest over Confederate statue in Pittsboro

Tensions were high again Saturday as people gathered in Pittsboro to show their support and disapproval of a Confederate monument in front of the town's courthouse.

Three were arrested during the protest, which began around 10 a.m. Saturday on East Street in Pittsboro. The Chatham County Sheriff's Office said the protest lasted until around 5 p.m.

Arrested were Jessica Lynne Reavis, 40, of Danville, Va., Richard Dundas Allen, 43, of Pittsboro, and Thalia Katheria Considnie, 30, of Durham. Reavis was arrested for carrying a concealed gun and carrying a concealed weapon. Allen was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Considnie was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, carrying a concealed weapon and weapons at parades.

Each was released on a written promise to appear in court on Nov. 6. No one was hurt at the rally.

Saturday's protest adds to the list of ones held previously regarding the monument and Confederate flags hung throughout town. This past Tuesday was the deadline for the United Daughters of the Confederacy to submit a plan to the county for relocation of the Confederate monument.

The county did not receive a plan. Officials said in a statement the monument would be "declared a public trespass" on Nov. 1, clearing the way for the commissioners to devise their own removal plan.

Barbara Pugh, president of the UDC's Winnie Davis Chapter, has maintained the statue is now county property and cannot be moved under a 2015 state law governing public monuments.
