Thieves steal ATM using chains in Orange County

Thieves stole an ATM early Tuesday morning at a gas station, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office said it happened at the Refuel gas station and convenience store at 11620 U.S. Hwy 15 501 North.

Thieves broke the glass on the front door, wrapped a chain around an ATM and used a large SUV to pull the machine out through the double doors, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said security footage shows a suspect approaching the gas station at about 1:53 a.m. Tuesday and gaining entry through the glass doors after several minutes.

According to the sheriff’s office, a white Chevy Suburban or Tahoe pulled up about 15 minutes later.

The sheriff’s office said three people worked together to steal the ATM, causing considerable damage to the building.

Based on debris found at the scene, it appears the vehicle traveled northbound on Smith Level Road toward Carrboro. Security footage showed the rear hatch of the vehicle was open as the SUV pulled away.

The people wore masks, gloves and jackets, obscuring identifying characteristics.

Investigators believe the crime may be connected to a series of similar thefts across North Carolina.
