When your defense is as good as The O'Neal School's was, you can do more than just weather a few rough quarters.

You can win a championship.

The Falcons did just that on Saturday at North Raleigh Christian Academy, taking the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A girls basketball championship by a 46-30 score over Wayne Country Day.

The Falcons (30-1) ran out a 23-15 lead at halftime and widened it to 43-24 after three quarters. The O'Neal School scored just seven points in the first quarter and scored just three in the final one, but that didn't matter. The Falcons actually won those combined quarters by an 11-10 score.

The Chargers (19-8) were the 3-seed in the 2A bracket and knocked off the 2-seed, Rocky Mount Academy, in the semifinals. They were averaging 63.3 points per game in their three playoff victories before running into the O'Neal buzzsaw.

The Falcons' only loss this year was to an out-of-state team.
