Heather Whalen is willing to morph into an instant chef or maybe even an Oompa-Loompa to keep her students engaged in the classroom.

As a media specialist, Whalen works with all students at Weatherstone Elementary School in Cary.

"You’re teaching them new reading skills, teaching them how to research, teaching them how to produce products that are digitally exciting for their audience to view," says Whalen.

For the last 25 years, Whalen has remained creative, even finding ways to bring books to students throughout virtual learning.

"I’m making sure the kids have access to the books that are in the library. So, I started a books-to-go program at our library and just yesterday I got to deliver the first round of books to the kids in their classrooms that are here face-to-face this week," she said.
